We need a solution that works even if we manage to trigger a mass exodus from existing social services. The needs to get architecture and choice of technology right are high. If we're going to stick with servers, we will have to teach them to distribute events efficiently. Very efficiently. If we choose a P2P-like architecture, where each person's computer distributes to its peers, we will still need smarter distribution strategies than just to connect each recipient one by one.
